Could you post that article for us?

And IMHO, there is more to the Voice Technology game than just having superior Voice Recognition. For ASR, development tools play a key role (Cost and Ease of Use). And the platforms they support, DSP or CPU, is key. How much extra hardware is required to implement the system? Also the Analog Front End is most critical (the microphones used in ordinary desktop computers are very noisy and add to error rates.) Licensing costs are very touchy here since any additional overhead cuts deep into already marginal OEM profits.

What would be your definition of a WIN for the speech industry? And, what market segments do you feel are most likely to adopt speech recognition as a viable user interface alternative?

BTY, I have delveloped a VOICE OS and HAND HELD VOICE COMPUTER first of its kind that worked in 93'. And MSFT did try to STEAL our pocket technology to comunicate with WINTEL machines when they visited us in a psuedo round of negotiation (they faked it to gain insight into our technology).

However, I believe the industry is positioned to take off when the next generation 500 mhz CPUs are incorporating I2O (Intelligent I/O processing ) chips on the mother board. The I2O chip will enable offloading of Voice Processing data streams and the extra horse power from the CPUs will be able to get the job done with additional error correction. I believe this will begin occurring at the end of 98. DSPs will proliferate on the mother board as well.

Perhaps Apple is still innovative enough to make this move. Regardless, the industry has been slow to adopt ASR in anything other than verticle markets. I would like to see some attempt towards an OPEN SYSTEM Standard, yet the industry to too competitive for that (There is a Speech API). And I would like to see a merger of the SMALL GUYS who do have SUPERIOR Voice Technology (both affordable and accurate).
