Take it to a good repair shop, it sounds like a software problem. Gather up all your disks for the repair shop.

3 years old, it still has a few more years of life in it.

My Dell notebooks hard drive failed about 6 months ago, it only cost 240 bucks for a new drive and ghosting the data over to that drive. I want to get another 6 months - 1.5 years out of this. It's 4.3 years old right now.

If you buy a new notebook, look at IBM's line. That's what my new notebook is going to be.
