Tom, welcome back. Where have you been? The thread has had a much better dialogue over the past two weeks without people constantly referring to others as stupid or idiots or emotionally crippled. Maybe you could try to join this new higher quality dialogue.

One of the problems about all of us using terms like "civil war", is that it connotes a complete breakdown of social order. This is certainly the kind of civil war we suffered in our country and we saw in Viet Nam. But there can be other internal disturbances within a nation, or a nation building exercise, that hinder the development of social order and progress due to the inherent risks of violence which are always just below the surface. If American pulled out of Iraq tomorrow most commentators I have seen (even those on Fox News) believe a traditional Civil War would erupt. The vacuum would just be too great. Religious and ethnic issues which have been in play for a thousand years would come to the fore, fueled by the power and influence oil would bring (if your region has it!).

I don't think there is a civil war in Iraq at present. Could there be if the U.S. pulled out and the Shia are seen by the Sunni as overplaying their hand? Absolutely. Can the U.S. continue to help broker a deal within the emerging government that can allay such fears and build enough trust in the government by the entire population to hold things together? That is the question of the day.

But as long as bombers are willing to destroy religious shrines....wantonly...what else would they be willing to do if given the opportunity? How would American catholics have reacted if St. Patricks was bombed by a protestant, regardless of the underlying pretext for the act? And such an act did not take place once, but several times?
