len,

Land sales to support education, regardless of where the proceeds are directed, is simply the wrong way to support education. If this should become the basis to fund education in rural areas then the question I have is where does it end? Do we have a sale every 5 or 10 years to continue funding schools. Eventually a land base will no longer be available. This approach will also result in endless litigation from a number of groups or interests. Environmentalists, local communities and indigenous peoples all have strong interests in seeing public lands stay public. I believe the battles over logging are nothing compared to what would develop if large scale land sales are seriously considered.

In my estimation, the single biggest threat to the environment, in regards to public lands, is not resource development, rather it is a fracturing of the land base.
