Peter, It has been experienced by many people that have tried to help others, that the those that receive the aid, know they can never repay it, and for some strange reason, resent the giver for putting them in such a position.
Whether our aid to a country goes to the people that need it,or not, if their government becomes close to being an enemy of America, we must cut the funds off. If nothing else but save money, it may make the people of that nation to rise up and get rid of the leaders that keep them oppressed.
In cities, I feel sure that the churches did as much as they could to help the people in need, but out in the boon docks, where so many people were at that time, the churches were as poor as any of the people, so it was the people that came together when there was need.
The government started taking responsibility during the Great Depression, but that help was intended to be short lived, and only last until the depression was over. The main push to be responsible for all the citizens began with FDR. From social Security, the snake grew more heads, and what we have now, is the result. Some of the benefits from the government would be good if the fraud and corruption could be removed, which would bring the cost down to a reasonable amount.
Although I hope it doesn't happen, I won't be here 50 or 100 years from now to see the fall of the American Empire, just like the Ancient Roman Empire crashed into ruin. |
