Sun Will Maintain and Support Northern Gas Network's IT Transition From National Grid Transco
LONDON and SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sun Microsystems, (Nasdaq: SUNW - News) the creator and leading advocate of Java(TM) technology, today announced that Northern Gas Networks, the gas distributor for the North of England, has selected a Sun infrastructure to support the overhaul of its IT system and ensure reliability and performance of its new network.

Northern Gas Networks began business in June 2005 with the sale by National Grid of its pipeline operation across northern England. Northern Gas Networks chose to replace the incumbent National Grid system with a single, integrated infrastructure aligned to the needs of its 2.5 million customers.
Sun is providing Northern Gas Networks' software and servers including: Sun Fire V20z Server, Sun StorEdge Enterprise Storage Manager, the Solaris Operating System, Sun Cluster software, local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) network provisioning and Sun's Remote Administration Centre, which provides 24x7 remote management of the entire solution.
Through the adoption and implementation of an integrated network infrastructure, Northern Gas Networks expects a seamless transition from the current service to the Sun network, the ability to prove regulatory compliance in a prompt and proactive manner and to establish itself as a leader in customer service. Northern Gas Networks anticipates the deployment of Sun's technology will enable the company to adapt to developments in its market, such as changing customer requirements, much more quickly and with greater agility. Consequently, it will support further growth and expansion across its business.
