Nursing home evacuated a SECOND TIME.

March 5, 2006

FROM STAFF REPORTS

A nursing home in the Rogers Park neighborhood that was evacuated earlier Sunday due to high levels of carbon monoxide was left without heat later in the day, and residents were removed again.

The nursing home on the 7400 block of N. Sheridan Rd. was first evacuated about 10:40 a.m. Sunday, according to a Fire Department dispatcher.

An SBC telephone directory lists the Deauville Health Care Center nursing home at the Sheridan Road address.

The elevated carbon monoxide levels were believed to be caused by a faulty boiler, and because the boiler was shut down, the nursing home was without heat as of about 4:15 p.m. Sunday, according to a Rogers Park District sergeant who did not want her name used.

For that reason, residents of the nursing home were being removed again, the sergeant said. Part of Sheridan Road near Birchwood Avenue was closed to traffic to accommodate the residents who were being removed, the lieutenant said.

The original carbon monoxide elevation prompted a call of an Emergency Medical Services Plan 1 and a Level 1 Hazardous Materials response.

An EMS Plan 1 sends five ambulances to the scene. The EMS Plan 1 was secured by 11:45 a.m.
