The greater majority was taken from those on the ground at the time.

If you want to believe that every square inch of Palestine was inhabited in 1948, which it wasn't. What the British held passed to the Israelis in the Jewish Partition. Much of that land was not inhabited, nor owned by anyone in particular.

This is the same thing that happened with the Palestinians in their partition, until the Jordanians occupied and annexed their territory.
