Yeah, but the reviews, how ever you wish to bad mouth them, were ALL coming in in favor of Athlon, AND since the best use for an x86 server at the time was a netserver, Athlons who had a much higher IPC were perfect.
A larger catch might be good for a VERY small "department" like maybe max 10 people, BUT Everybody who was anybody wanted a network server, even if all they used was outlook express to communicated with in the company.
I do not define THE ABOVE as a server, it was no more than Bob's big machine that you could hook the printer to, sort of thing.
And for a period of time, which differs, depending on which basher is posting, Intel had no answer.
And THAT was the SEED of what Intel is suffering from today. Opterons as a practical matter were Athlons with more reliable and even faster IPC.
And when AMD began to hook them together and when people began to appreciate that MHz was not as important as IPC, Intel started looking stoopid in the market place, 64bit and DC are only marketing buzzwords in a sense that are used to bolster AMD's market presence. |
