If Trimble ever got into consumer electronics, they would be worth talking about. I heard that they tried once with robotics, but it did poorly. They seem to be sticking with surveying equipment – a steady source of revenue, but that’s as exciting as toasters. <g>

Garmin (GRMN) has taken over the GPS consumer electronics business. I don’t put E-911 in that category. SiRF (SIRF), Global Locate (VC funded) and Qualcomm (QCOM) are into GPS and assisted GPS.

If Trimble ever stated that they wanted to dominate something like the in-vehicle navigation market, I’d take another look. Consequently, they remind me of Jim Cramer’s description of Budweiser: (paraphrasing) people are not going to suddenly stop drinking Bud, but there’s unlikely to be a big upsurge either.

On the plus side, their stock chart looks encouraging since November of 2005, with a shoulder formed earlier through July.
