You're right, Kerry failed to anticipate the smearvets campaign. That was his one big mistake. And I for one tried to warn him.

Kerry believed that the truth would win out. He was partly wrong. On the other hand, I spoke to Anne Richards who was also a victim of a Rove smear campaign. She told me that you're damned if you do damned if you don't, in terms of responding directly to a smear campaign. If you take the smear jockeys on directly, they gain prominence. Sadly though the press gave smearvets prominence anyway, which was outrageous and sad. Those smearvets didn't tell the truth a single time.

The new congress in November should make smear campaigns illegal. Some kind of truth in advertising needs to be applied to politics just like it is dishwashing detergent and automobiles.
