The real solution is to get off oil. OTOH, this will take a long time.
If you look at a map of the GOM they basically drew a line due south from the FL-Al border. You can drill to the left of it. Not to the right. Realistically they could curve the line to the right (east) and still be well offshore of the FL coast.
Perhaps tap into more fields. On the downside, new oil and a drop in price will keep people hooked on oil. So maybe the governemt should tax it more to keep up the price. This would be very unpopular however.

I think Georgia and South Carolina could do some shelf drilling. In case of a spill it would only end up on Jersey beaches anyway. Might not even notice. LOL
