We took our walk on the wild side today in Gotham (NYC). Our visit to Ampex's display of the DST line equipment, the demonstration of the 812 drilling through 12.4 terabytes was awesome. John F. Hennessy, Director of Business Development, physically demonstrated to us how each machine operates (easy, smooth and efficient) their upward scalability - 312 to 412 to 812, the different data cartridges ( 50 GB, 150 GB and 330 GB ) with reasoning for their size [(inter-changeability within the machine (application driven))], interfaces receiving satellite data streams, four screws to remove when field replacing heads (almost instantly), laser cut holes where forced air lifts the tape off the head delivering blazing search speeds of 1600 meg (8 times faster than competitor's 200 meg).
It was related to me that IBM system engineers at the IT confernece also requested a drill down demonstation thru the 812 unit (12.4 Terabytes is 16 seconds) and were very impressed by the success of the technology and hardware.
We went there to see, feel, touch, to prove their quoted 15 to 20 meg delivery of uncompressed data (IBM is 9 meg in lavatory demos!). Ampex delivered. IMO Their demonstrations proved to us AMPEX is, exponentially, an industry leader! |
