Tom, the older folks in my family like gold a lot as security and status.. but they are all fairly well off anyway... it is not first on their list.. my speculation is that if all of a sudden folks can buy the things perceived as staples of the good life... won't they or will they buy gold instead... and simply watch the good life from afar.. content to stroke their gold before nodding off to sleep.. peoples' attitudes change... One buys gold as insurance , but food comes before insurance... or one buys gold when in a siege mentality... Buying gold seems to me portrayed here in the west as manic desire by Asians superceding most financial concerns... I wonder if Asian folks are so different that will not want many of the same things we do... It's been 5 years now since I was in China.. but the impression I got was of a rising consumer class.. People get anal on both sides of the This time it's different argument I think.. It's always different Do you think we all behave the same financially as our parents ? I've never lived through a depression. or.. as Cyndi Lauper so well said it in her cover of Prince... Money changes everything like to own old vinyl records :o) but I also have a freezer full of food, a house of my own not the banks ... education funds for two kids allocated... a couple of vehicles free and clear.. and well yes a couple of pricey gold watches in the safe deposit box ... I dunno, I like gold here too but I think betting the return of the Golden Horde is a highly speculative :o) Al just floating out there in the cosmic soup with rest of you..
