In the course of the twentieth century it became abundantly clear that things had gone badly wrong in the Middle East—and, indeed, in all the lands of Islam.

At the end of the crusades, the mongol armies conquered most of the middle east. While they eventually converted to Islam, it still diverted the attention to that area and left the West to attack Spain and Italy with far less opposition.
