Problem is they aren't in a support role, they're doing the fighting.

Uh.. I thought that was what being a soldier was all about..

During my service, we were all taught back in the '80s that in the next war (US vs Soviets) there would be no front line and that units needed to train to protect themselves in combat.

Btw, while I'm not saying that all reserve units are used strictly for perimeter security, all of the units that guarded our base were reservists.

However, I concur that in many instances, non-combat units are performing combat roles, in particular Air Force personnel providing convoy security. There is definite hard-feelings about some non-combat MOS personnel being denied a Combat badge to reflect their experiences.. I'm personally all for it.. Combat is Combat.. If you're getting shot at and are engaging the enemy in an effort to destroy him, you're in combat and should receive the appropriate honors to honor that.
