Different branches of government meaning congress and the judicial making sure the White House doesn't act like a monarchy.

That's only part of it.

All the branches have constitutionally defined roles. In practice the roll of the judiciary may have expanded the most.


Bushies have taken this country as far to the right


That doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Bad, good or indifferent, many of Bush's actions have little to do with taking the country to the right. He is in certain ways conservative, less so in others.

As for suspending elections the idea that there would have been even a serious effort to do that is ridiculous. If someone talks in a very theoretical sense about what might happen in response to a massive attack on election day (far exceeding 9/11 probably requiring nukes to pull off, or highly effective bio weapons) and says that under those conditions elections might be delayed, all the sudden you imply that they where plotting to cancel elections.
