Bush's brand of "rightwing" panders to two principal base special interests, both of them very powerful. These are not your father's conservatives, they aree something far more noxious and dangerous. Barry Goldwater would be alarmed.
1) The industrial corporate fat cat big oil-weapons-pollution-drug-banking-Walmart cronies and their lobbyists. Including the Saudi and Dubai types. This is where the money comes from and who is gouging us for over a trillion dollars. This also includes billionaire misers who don't want to pay taxes, and corps which don't want to pay workers well, protect them or give them health care coverage.
2) The religious and cultural right which is made up of millions of conservative evangelicals, gun nuts, prudes, gay-haters and middle-American conformists. This is almost an all-white group, male-dominated, but though they call themselves Christians, they often back decidedly un-christian policies.
Together, these Bushies have three shining accomplishments, none of which most people like. Getting us into Iraq, cutting taxes for the rich and big corps while letting them gouge us, trying to merge government with evangelical type rightwing religion, and all that encompasses.
There is more, like the pollution issues, the supression of the free press and replacement of fact with propaganda, and all the DC corruption, but you get the idea.
One more thing, these forces will do anything to win. When it coems to grabbing power and money, they respect almost no ethical standards. They don't play by the rules. To them, there are no rules. |
