to give up without trying seems more than a little limp.

We are moving beyond it as we speak. The UN was a reconstituted "League of Nations," suited for the 1940s. We live in a much different world. We can't reform it, so we will replace it.

The leadership today comes from the twenty top countries, basically the "core." Those in the "gap," have to connect up before they can get a voice in running things. You are going to see us use the UN less and less, and the "G20" more and more.
