I heard a great radio interview on how we are bungling it with Iran. They have an entire generation that generally likes Americans, but are very patriotic. They have a 90% literacy rate and the highest internet usage in the ME, completely unrestricted.

The chimpistration's sword rattling is what allowed the current leader there to win, over the more moderated candidate. The further we put the screws to the Iranians and isolate them, the more power the reactionary Islamists get, driving even people who would normally support us to side with the Islamist reactionaries, just as in the election.

The smarter course would be to engage with the Iranians, expand trade and contacts and demostrate to the potentially freindly Iranians that we aren't asshole, country-invading worst-case-future projecting paranoids. We aren't are we? A much smarter President did this with China.

We need to give the moderates in Iran some evidence to argue with. We haven't provided any to date.
