and the radio interview you heard was with George Clooney or Barbra Streisand? Wow we all engage in oversimplification at times but yours is a classic case of simpleton analysis.

The mullahs were for rafsanjani who lost because people saw him as part of the priveleged class. Students were too busy drinking cappucino to become involved. There is no major moderate movement in iran. Moderates have been intimidated and students bought off with some limited rights. So what we got was a populist, nationalist, non mullah, ignorant religious fanatic (small r). Yes iran is nationalist and nuke development is being used as a nationalist issue by mullahs to quiet reformers. Talking with the mullahs is not the answer chris even if clooney thinks so.
