Were they ambassadors and other high officials? If not, not the same.

If he was just some shmuck that put on a black turban in Kandahar, and thought the Talibs were great as home baked cookies, there'd be no problem. But he was a high official of the regime, and he carries that as a black mark forever. He wasn't under duress, he didn't "have to do it" out of necessity - he chose his role, or at least chose not to turn it down. He chose his mark, and he deserves the consequences.
