I answered the question in my first paragraph.

"pleasures (or pain) of the flesh are but momentary, desiring instead an eternal reward with God in heaven."

This life and this earth are not a Christian's permanent home. The Apostles gladly suffered hardship and pain and counted it as a sacrifice to God. I do understand that pain and the pleasure of this earth is fleeting.
