The Western Roman empire's death, but the Eastern Roman empire continued and flourished for many years in Constantinople.

Historians generally put the Golden Age of Islam as 750-1500. Interestingly, their decline was also at the hands of barbarian invaders - for them, the Mongols. And, parallel to the invaders that destroyed Rome but later became Christians, many of the invading Mongols converted to Islam.

What I guess has been lost from the original discussion is that each religion has enjoyed good and bad times, and each has been used by evil men for secular purposes in pursuit of earthly powers and riches.
