People in the US are awash in stuff, floating on a sea of goods and services yet they don't feel particularly wealthy and they didn't work that hard for all this stuff they own so they conclude that it has to be a mirage, an illusion, some sort of financial sleight of hand.

They claim they prefer personal relations to stuff but that's just a self-serving lie. With all this stuff few are happy. Before the pseudo boom of the late '90s I noticed people were more happy when interest rates were high, economy was slow, and nothing was happening.

How much do you guys think this might have to do with birth rates? Or at least meaningful (to them) activity?

I've got the new widget I was pining for - now what?

I came across a good heavens! glory be! story in yesterday's National Post. According to a very recent survey done for the paper, the city in Canada where folk most look forward to going to work is - Ottawa! Apparently all those civil servants (however mistaken they may be) feel good going to work because they are doing a public service - doing their duty. Arrrgh!
