Will they learn a lesson? If history is any guide, yes. Will it be long lasting? It really depends on your definition of "long". Enough apparently forgot, or never learned, the danger of the "unitary executive" from Nixon. Now Nixon wasn't the worst possible example of the danger and the Republicans never gave up on the possibilities, so that may be part of the reason. There hasn't been an example of machine politics like DeLay and Co. has put together in a very long time. Even Chicago under Daley wasn't anywhere close to this scale. And we've never had a President who mixed so many goals that are so totally against the ideals of this country, yet able to package them as the essence of the American Spirit with the collusion of the media. There isn't any real historical precedent.
