I disagree, my take is that many (maybe a majority) of the "conservatives" on SI were against the Port deal. Furthermore many on the "right" have no use for globalization, nor have no problem fanning xenophobic fears (I'll agree with you there about Malkin).

Frankly, I don't think the Democrats thought they were going to win this. Now they're stuck with a win I don't think they really wanted. Of course as far as the 2006 elections go, both the Democrats and Republicans up for re-election win in this - for now.

Are you saying that you would have been in favor of forcing P&O to sell its American port facilities even if the London firm stayed a British owned company? What if one of the Sultan of Dubai's nephews becomes a U.S. Citizen, and takes over the Company - no problem then? It would be an American owned company.
