Many smaller states keep their delegation for a long time. When I was growing up, Mike Mansfield was THE senator from Montana. I think Nixon made him into an Ambassador to Japan finally. He was VERY highly regarded in the Senate by both parties.

Mike Mansfield served in four different Armed Services. I don't remember the particulars.

My mother got a card from him every Christmas. I think they were classmates at the University of Montana. Anyway, the University named its new library after him.
