Sonus to move back to Westford in 2007
By TOM SPOTH, Sun Staff

WESTFORD -- Sonus Networks Inc. is planning to come back to town, just three years after jumping ship for a location in neighboring Chelmsford.

The company has grown quickly in the last year, adding about 100 employees at its headquarters on Apollo Drive, said Sonus' president and COO, Bert Notini. The company now employs 768 people, with just more than half of those located in Chelmsford.

The new Westford office on Technology Park Drive has roughly the same square footage (about 130,000) but has more usable space, Notini said.

The building, owned by Boston-based Teradyne, is currently empty. Teradyne, which makes testing systems for the semiconductor industry, had acquired Westford-based GenRad in 2001, but those workers were eventually moved to other locations.

Notini said Sonus has signed a sublease effective through 2012. Sonus was headquartered on Carlisle Road in Westford from the company's inception in 1997 through early 2004.

Sonus' three-year lease in Chelmsford expires early next year and the company plans to move back to Westford sometime in January 2007, Notini said.

Sonus makes equipment used in voice-over IP technology, and markets its wares to providers of telephone, Internet and cable services. Among its customers are Qwest Communications, Global Crossing and Deutsche Telekom. Products include switches and related network software.

The company's Chelmsford office houses much of its engineering team, and the new Westford building will be outfitted with a new laboratory and testing facility.

Sonus reported 2004 revenues of $170.7 million. It reports fourth-quarter and year-end results for 2005 tomorrow afternoon.
