<Can they handle a grade? Would they work in San Francisco?>

Yes. But as with any engine, they use a LOT of energy going uphill. But, the Segway has regenerative braking so you'd get a lot back as you go downhill.

Because of their torque characteristics, you'd be able to go really fast uphill. They wouldn't go slower uphill. Apparently.

A 50 kg woman would use a LOT less energy than a 100 kg man [or woman], so distance travelled on a charge would vary a LOT.

They really are very impressive. A bicycle would be better on flat roads with a long way to travel and won't run out of battery. A bike can go faster. With small Segway wheels, bumps are more of a problem. One would need to be a bit more attentive to the surface.

Beijing would be perfect for them, apart from the cost; wide bicycle lanes everywhere, flat, and crowded. At $5000, that's a bit much compared with $50 for a good bicycle when GDP per capita in China is considered.
