Regarding the role of fund raising and money, I think 2004 proved that money is not much of a factor. It is campaigning tactics that matters. Dean failed since his tactics were poor. Kerry failed for the same reason. He was unable to confront the opposition effectively. Negative campaigning, sadly has come to stay. The American people will vote for those who can effectively thwart the negative attacks.

I'm not arguing that how well campaigns are financed is the only factor that makes for winning and losing. But it's among the very most important, if not _the_ most. Certainly one can't win with a dumb candidate (GWB, not withstanding) nor with an unattractive candidate but the underfunded, in my view, have no chance at all.

And what troubles me is the way in which campaigns are determined by the dollars. In 2000, the strategy of the GWB camp was to lock up all the fund raising specialists so only the foolhardy would oppose him. It's clear that's now become the basic narrative about winning campaigns.

I see it now in my state of New Jersey. According to recent stories in both the New York Times and The Record of Bergen County, Menendez was appointed, by Corzine, to finish out Corzine's term, because of his much superior ability to extract money from the various extractable places but he was already well on his way to having a large supply of campaign stuff for the general election in 06. And it's highly rumoured that the various very strong Dem candidates decided not to oppose Mendendez in any Dem primaries in 06 because of his superior war chests.

I vote for public funded campaigns. Period.
