From an American standpoint, it was purely an air war. In Iran, we don't want to wage a ground war. Why would we? Our objective would not be regime change or occupation, rather it would be destruction of all nuclear facilities and ground to air missiles. We could reduce their military-industrial complex to dust and set them back decades. That would be worth it. Hell, we've already spent $400B in the middle east since all of this crap began. We might as well finish the job. Iran and Syria are the only bad apples left standing in the Middle East. It would take much to finish this thing off and then bring our troops home.
