They got abused badly. As far as "extended", it's unclear that there is 'cause and effect' there... the Roman empire was huge by the standards of the day, and the safety there was just going along with the crowd... just like religions in some places. I find it interesting that from a DNA viewpoint it's unclear that our society should be structured the way it is... I think religion casts a net much wider than most suppose. dAK
