This is what I'm having trouble with. If you or I up and decided to run, we couldn't demonstrate any support. The way we would demonstrate support now is by getting financial backing but that wouldn't be permitted. Another way is by being famous for something else, like football or acting. Surely we wouldn't want to close the field down to all but celebrities. And then there's the support of one of the major two parties. I suppose if one of them put you on the ticket, that would demonstrate support. But it would mean that the party machines would decide our candidates for us.

I see the attraction of public funding but I'm not about to support anything if I have no idea how it might work.
