Frank,
I can see it now....Fed Government mandates that all gas lines have no switchbacks to accomodate data infrastructure.

Meanwhile, we will find out that the switchbacks have a purpose to the gas transportation system.

Or maybe there is value in having a separation of infrastructure in emergencies so that one event doesn't take down our entire infrastructure. I harken back to the 1994 Northridge earthquake where there were multiple natural gas line breaks that were somewhat spectacular in their fiery character. So now instead of one infrastructure down, we have two. And who gets priority in repairs? Communications or heat? Tell ya what, I'm gonna be pissed if my hot shower is interrupted because the Federal Datacom Network workers need to do a fiber splice on an installed cable. And there is another part of my concern...it can start off small, but things in the government never stay small, they grow and they get more power and it is impossible to dismantle them. I don't want to give the government a foot in the door, especially when I am convinced that they are just adding overhead. And I am not convinced that we are losing the long term economic battles. Sure government sponsorship of initiatives will give a country a head start for some things. However, is it sustainable? I think that all you have to do is look at the social security system that we have to see what happens with government sponsored initiatives. Eventually it will implode...and they will implode too.

If we want the Federal government to take on this responsibility, then I think someone should put out the effort to have a constitutional amendment drafted. Until then, it is, and in my opinion, should be, moot.
