I understand your point, but as a former officer, I have to say, it doesn't always play out that way. While all the other weapon choices you mention are good alternatives, I don't know of many officers who have them at their immediate disposal. The taser would most likely be the weapon many officers might have on the scene.
You'd be shocked to know what some suspects will do in the same situation; things that defy logic to the prudent man. One thing to remember, however, most prudent persons would not put themselves in a situation such as this. It is not a stretch to say that many suspects that find themselves in these situations are not always of sound judgement in the first place....I know this, because I have a stab wound to show for it.
Back to your original message point; the taser would be a good choice from the limited info I learned here, but deadly force is justified in many situations that might "seem" to have other options. I guess we would have to be there to know what really transpired...if deadly force was justified or not.
