It's a lot harder when you start out with the deck stacked against you... women didn't even have the right to vote until 150 years into this country's existence, and that makes for quite the psychological backlog against women in office. It doesn't help that we do remain largely misogynistic in this country (no, not in the same way Arab countries are). There is a large percentage of women in this country that is brainwashed against women being in power (see Ann Coulter), and there are no men who think men shouldn't be in power, so men get quite the headstart in every election.
