The NRA has peppered the internet with false and misleading stories about their origins so that if you do a search you'll find only their propaganda, unless you dog deeper. This kind of thing is also used in the rightwing smear campaigns. for instance if you do a search for "John Kerry combat record" you'll find only smears and libelous falsehoods claiming JK was a traitor and "no hero".
