Turns out I have a distant uncle who was one of those early missionaries to Honolulu back in the 1850s.

Michener said, "The Missionaries came to Hawaii to 'do good.' And they did very well." Their timing was perfect. The leaders were very unhappy with their old God, who they thought had just failed them.

We indoctrinate such a phony picture of what the Islands were like when the white man showed up. They were a stone age culture where you got killed for stepping in the shadow of a superior. And they were in the midst of an inter-island war. But boy, did they have a good climate!
