Why would Russia want Iran to produce nuclear bombs? Chechnya is just up the road and Chechens have enthusiastically murdered a school full of children.

I don't believe the Russians want Iran to have nukes any more than does the US or Israelis. They want to have influence in the Mid-East because they are just as threatened by Islamo-Fascism as we are.

But the US has deprived them of their influence in Iraq. They were kicked out of Afghanistan 17 years ago. The US is vying to replace their influence in the 'Stans and Georgia.

So playing the Iran, or supporting Syria (a risky proposition now) is the only game they have in town in that region.

Thus, building nuclear plants for Iran, albeit tied to Russian enrichment of the fuel, and holding talks with Hamas is Putin's way of saying, "you need to take Russia's interests into consideration George Bush"..

That's my initial read on it.
