Clinton was our most successful president in 20-40 years, depending on whether you consider Reagan a success. The people gave them both nice approval ratings as they left office, in the 60%-65% range. Clinton's was a little higher than Reagan's. Reagan also left a huge deficit which required tax hikes for many years to come. The S+L debacle and Iran-Contra were two big black eyes.

The rightwing had no way to beat Clinton or tarnish him, so they organized a massive smear campaign. None of the criminal accusations they hurled against Clinton turned out to be true. Not a shred of it. Clinton may fool around but he's a genuinely nice guy, especially with women. Also, Ken Starr was a Trojan Horse. He was supposed to be independent, but turned out to be very partisan and not very honest. Still, he couldn't find anything criminal to stick on the CLintons. Nothing, not even a parking ticket.
