My parents tell some very funny stories about getting to Chichen Itza in the early seventies. It was not yet commercially developed. They could rent a yeep (Jeep) or a buggy (VW Bug) but the buggy would have trouble in the mud. The "road" was a path wide enough for one vehicle with wider places cut ever mile or so for passing. Being the one to back up was a pain.

Two couples went. The women got to sit on a wooden bench in back. The weather was nasty for most of the trip, but when they went to see the pyramid it had been good for a day or so. They only got stuck a couple times.
