IBM Corp. landed a multimillion-dollar contract with the Texas Department of Information Resources. IBM (NYSE: IBM - News) will provide statewide email and collaboration software to the agency. IBM estimates the Austin-based Department of Information Resources will save 45 percent on those costs.
Initially, 13 state agencies signed a letter of intent to participate in the project. The agreement offers government agencies nationwide the opportunity to sign up for several email options, including Lotus Notes, Microsoft Outlook and Web email.
The contract is estimated to be worth tens of millions of dollars over the next several years.
IBM beat out companies such as Microsoft Corp., Electronic Data Systems Corp. and Sun Microsystems Inc. to win the Texas contract.
"In addition to the significant cost savings, this agreement provides added security, performance guarantees, disaster recovery services and increased functionality for public sector entities," says Larry Olson, chief technology officer for the state of Texas.
IBM employs more than 6,000 people in Austin.
