The problem from this point is that perception feeds on itself, and if the base starts shifting away and talking among themselves...then the shift intensifies or accelerates and becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy .

I think the President needs to bring in a couple of greybeards to help sort out the White House team and get everyone on the same page. These would be Managers, not strategists like Rove. Almost every President has found the need to do this, and in business it is done all the time.
Recharge. Refocus. Redefine. maybe even reinvent.
