Smart Energy Matrix


The Smart Energy Matrix is a design concept for a modular, flywheel-based energy storage system that would provide a long-term sustainable solution for grid frequency regulation. Based on proven Beacon Patented Co-mingled Rim Technology (PCRT) flywheel design for robustness and reliability, its performance specification calls for providing megawatts of reliable and responsive stored energy for minutes or even hours. Its patented long-life, low-maintenance design and highly cyclic capability is intended to deliver a clean, emissions-free, cost-effective alternative to conventional fossil fuel-based frequency regulation methods.

Thanks to a design that includes housing in a transportable 30-foot shipping container, the Beacon Power Smart Energy Matrix could be located nearly anywhere on the grid. Depending on operator requirements, it could be placed at or near a substation or within the distribution system, where additional benefits such as voltage regulation, backup support, or reactive power could be provided for even greater value.
