Some very good companies are making the choice to remain private because of the liability and reporting requirements of going public. The secondary market for private placements is more robust than it's ever been. I'm assuming they have audited financials, I'd start there and I'd also do some research on the principals at Edgar. Sometimes you uncover a long chain of failed enterprises whose only business plan involved selling shares of their "companies" to fresh meat. Go visit the company in person. If it has a mail drop attached to a Mail Box, etc. in Vancouver or Florida run for your life.
