Out here skiing generally requires poles and cross country skis. Corn stubble can be a bear, and it definitely sucks to fall on. Wheat stubble is better, but the winter wheat farmers get mad.

I skied in Virginia. That is all you describe in Ohio and Pennsylvania, plus a puddle of water on top.
