The film was highly fictionalized.

It's not a good idea to rely on Hollywood for accurate history. The broad details were correct--the Israeli athletes were killed, there was retribution, etc.--beyond that, use the salt shaker.

I suppose it goes without saying that no one should rely on Hollywood for political analysis. Hollywood is in the entertainment business but manages to take itself seriously; that's actually when I find it entertains the best, and I generally don't have to pay for a ticket to laugh at its arrogance.
