We need to modify behaviour with tax policy. We do it all the time (cigarette and liquor taxes, or the $Billions in breaks we give to energy companies). It's in the national interest, and will make us a more prosperous and independent county. Right now, the biggest threat to our national security is our oil dependence. Almost all from bad actors (ME, Soviets, Venezuela). With our imports at ~60% of consumption, a major disruption in supply would quickly put us into an economic depression. They have us by the balls. And there are a number of scenarios that could do that... especially with our reckless foreign policy. Get us off foreign oil, and the ME has no strategic value... it's becomes as important as, say, Africa. We can get the hell out and let them live their own lives. It really is all about the oil... and increased efficiency frees up so much capitol that could be used for productive purposes. A huge national opportunity. John
