If southern Utah's polygamist experience is any indication, young girls will be forced into a polygamist marriage by default. Just as you said, it is expensive to support a polyamorous family. For that reason, young girls will opt to marry early to older, more established, men in order to ensure some manner of financial security.

The interesting side effect is a large, unmarried pool of young men who have no hope of getting wives. These are small isolated communities, though. But in traditional societies that practice polygamy, the same sort of calculations take place.
